my primary school went on a field trip to sudwala caves today. they brought me along so i could experience the area too. it is around sabi area; we actually drove the route of the longtom marathon. our departure time was 530am. i got up and made my way to school in the pitch black, surprised i did not stumble on the rocky road. the stars were amazing, no moon. i was the last one to school minus all the teachers and principal who did not show up until 545. all the woman were there with blankets wrapped around them to keep warm in the cold darkness as they waited for all the kids to leave. we loaded the bus with 85 kids and the mini bus got the rest and the adults piled in on top and we took off. the kids screamed and jumped and sang and whistled an ear piercing 45 minutes into our trip. i was prepared with earplugs. we stopped along the way to use the public coed outdoor bathroom-walk 5 steps and squat in the nonexistant ditch- twice and stopped at a grocery store for lunch. we finally got to the caves and took a tour that i understood about 5 words of but knew exactly what was going on because they are all the same. some of the formations were really cool and some spots had neat lighting. then we went to the dinosaur park and learned all about dinos in english. i felt bad for the guide who kept trying to make jokes to our non-english-speaking kids. the kids were pumped, but i think they would gave been just as excited to walk around a regular park unguided. they just never get to leave the village ever. and now we are back on the bus watching the sun set over the passing mountains. it would be serene and picturesque if i were not going deaf and getting constantly smacked in the head by the bouncing children. what a day. what an experience!
