i woke up last night around midnight to a crackling sound. it sounded like a control burn everyone does to their field, only it was the middle of the night. i threw on some shoes and went out into the warm night to investigate. as i open my door, the smokey smell wafts into my room. i'm thinking that can't be good. as i step out into the yard dazed by the orange glowing sky, i finally see the flames. i am guessing they are on the edge of the village, but they look as though they surround us in all directions i can see. i was quite freaked out by this, but i have learned something here: do not panic unless the people around me are worried. since no one else cared, and i could hear a few voices having a friendly chat so i know i am not the only one up or who has seen the fire, i went back to bed. this morning the world still smelled of smoke and everywhere you go even inside, there is ashes and soot. looking out, the big field outside the village is black, even the trees. everywhere that was not burned already. i cannot imagine that one was planned. good thing some of the other fields were already burned this season. crazy!
